What to Look for in Good Used Cars

Author: Mel C
Some used cars have lots of life in them, while others are almost ready to expire. To save expensive repairs you need to take note of these few tips.

Not all used cars are created equal; there are bargains, with low mileage and of excellent condition, and there are rust buckets that should not be allowed on the road. And in between these two extremes there are many used cars that are moderately good buys. So what should you look for in a good used car apart from the two selling points listed above?

For those who are not well-versed in the mechanics of a car and how it sounds, the best thing they can do is to ask a trusted mechanic to take the used car for a drive, listen to the engine and inspect it all thoroughly. This may cost you, but it will also save the mistake of buying a used car that is no good - or one that will cost you in expensive repairs six months down the track.

Apart from that, you can look at the general condition of the car, but don't forget that a shining, well-kept interior will not make it go any better if the engine is worn out. Tyres can be changed - and very often are - for a lot less than an engine can be repaired. And even if that used car is in excellent condition you still need to drive it yourself to make sure it is both comfortable and has no design differences that will drive you crazy.

For instance, many new cars now have the air-conditioning and fan knobs below all the radio and CD controls. It can be quite annoying to have the most-used knobs and levers poorly placed.
